Empowering the Next Generation: Highlights from the OPMA Young Professionals Summit

OPMA

In every industry, there are moments that remind us why community matters, why connection, mentorship, and shared learning fuel progress. Yesterday’s OPMA (Ontario Produce Marketing Assocation) Young Professionals Summit at Cirillo’s Culinary Academy in Toronto was one of those moments. It wasn’t just an event; it was a celebration of growth, unity, and the bright future of our industry.

As proud sponsors of the OPMA, Gwillimdale Farms was thrilled to support a day dedicated to empowering young professionals. Investing in the next generation isn’t just something we talk about, it’s something we live. Our core value of Unity drives us to contribute meaningfully to local initiatives, strengthen our industry, and help create opportunities for those who will shape its future.

OPMA

A Morning of Connection and Community

The day began with warm cups of coffee and tea, but the real energy came from the room itself. Familiar faces mixed with new ones as attendees gathered to network, reconnect, and build new relationships.

One of the most memorable icebreakers had everyone rotating every five minutes to find similarities with someone new. It was simple, fun, and surprisingly meaningful. Laughter filled the room as people discovered shared hobbies, unexpected connections, and common career experiences. It set the tone for a day rooted in openness and collaboration.

Learning from Leaders: The Power of Mentorship

The first major session of the day featured a dynamic panel discussion on The Power of Mentorship. Each panelist brought a unique perspective, different journeys, different lessons, and different insights into how mentorship shapes careers and strengthens industries.

From navigating early career challenges to building confidence, from finding the right mentor to becoming one, the conversation was rich with wisdom. Attendees walked away with actionable advice and a deeper appreciation for the relationships that guide professional growth.

A Culinary Experience and a Market Adventure

After an inspiring morning, we enjoyed a gourmet lunch prepared by the talented team at Cirillo’s. The food was exceptional, fresh, flavourful, and beautifully crafted.

Cooking, Collaboration, and Creativity

We returned to Cirillo’s Cooking Academy for the final portion of the day, hands-on culinary teamwork. Chef John Cirillo has created a space where people from all backgrounds can come together to learn, create, and enjoy the art of cooking.

Teams were formed, ingredients were prepped, and the kitchen buzzed with excitement. We chopped, sautéed, seasoned, and learned new techniques using a variety of fresh vegetables. It was the perfect blend of creativity, collaboration, and fun.

The day wrapped up with everyone sampling their creations and reflecting on the lessons learned, not just about cooking, but about leadership, teamwork, and the power of shared experiences.
