Harvest Season at Gwillimdale Farms

Harvest Season

September marks the beginning of one of the most exciting times of the year at Gwillimdale Farms: harvest season. After months of planting, nurturing, and caring for our crops, it’s finally time to bring farm-fresh vegetables from our fields to retailer’s shelves for your family’s table.

Harvest is much more than simply gathering vegetables from the soil. It’s the culmination of months of planning, hard work, and careful stewardship of the land. From onions and potatoes to carrots, beets, and parsnips, every crop has its own journey, and every harvest tells a story.

Where Every Great Harvest Begins

Every Gwillimdale carrot journey starts with a seed planted in rich, highland soil. These nutrient-dense fields, combined with cool weather conditions, create the perfect environment for carrots to thrive. As the seeds sprout, our farmers carefully monitor soil conditions to ensure each plant has the space and resources needed to grow deep, strong, and healthy.

This balance of healthy soil and favourable climate does more than produce a good carrot. It produces a great one. The result is a field-grown carrot that naturally develops the sweetness, colour, and crunch consumers expect from Gwillimdale Farms.

As the carrots mature underground, they absorb sunshine, nutrients, and water, gradually developing their vibrant orange hue. Throughout the season, our team focuses on sustainable farming practices, crop rotation, and soil health initiatives that support both current and future harvests.

We believe farming is both an art and a science, rooted in generations of experience while embracing innovation and continuous improvement. Every vegetable reflects our commitment to quality, sustainability, and excellence.

Timing Is Everything

Harvest Season

When harvest season arrives, timing becomes critical. Each crop must be harvested at the right moment to achieve optimal flavour, texture, size, and storage potential.

This year has brought some unique challenges. According to Senior Farm Manager Murray, persistent rainfall has slightly delayed portions of the harvest schedule. However, there is positive news beneath the surface.

“We’ve had a wetter season than usual, which has pushed some harvest activities back slightly. The good news is that crop yields are looking stronger than last year. We’re simply waiting for the fields to dry out enough so we can continue harvesting under the best possible conditions.”

At Gwillimdale Farms, we work closely with nature, monitoring weather and field conditions daily to ensure every crop is harvested at its peak.

Onion Harvest Underway

Harvest Season

Harvest season begins as early as mid-August with crops such as onion transplants. In the weeks leading up to harvest, onions are carefully topped and laid in the field to cure naturally in the sun. This important step helps preserve quality, improve storage capability, and maintain flavour long after harvest is complete.

This year’s onion harvest has produced strong results, with excellent quality coming from the field. Once harvested, onions either move directly to our packing facility or into carefully managed storage, ensuring freshness for customers throughout the season.

Potatoes Looking Promising in Bradford and New Liskeard

Potato harvest is another major focus during the fall season. Using specialized harvesting equipment, our team carefully lifts potatoes from the fertile soils of Bradford to minimize damage and preserve quality. Potatoes are then sorted, stored, and packed with food safety and freshness top of mind.

Further north at our New Liskeard location, harvest activity is also in full swing. This year’s fingerling potatoes are proving to be a standout crop, showcasing excellent size, appearance, and quality.

A Season of Teamwork and Tradition

Harvest season continues through September and October as we bring in Gwillimdale onions, carrots, potatoes, beets, and parsnips. These root vegetables thrive in the rich soils of our growing regions, developing deep flavour profiles and impressive nutrient density throughout the season.

Every harvest represents months of dedication, sustainable farming practices, healthy soil management, and generations of agricultural knowledge. It’s a reminder of what farming is truly about: working with the land, respecting nature’s rhythms, and providing nourishing food for families across our communities.
