Empowering Summer Smiles: Nourishing Kids When School’s Out

School's Out

For most children, the last day of school signals the start of carefree summer days filled with sunshine, laughter, and time spent with friends. But for many families, it also marks the loss of reliable access to school-based meal programs, an essential source of daily nutrition during the academic year.

That’s where the “School’s Out” Summer Food Program, in partnership with the Helping Hand Food Bank, steps in.

Running throughout July and August, this program is designed to bridge the gap created when school meal supports pause for the summer. With 1 in 3 food bank visitors being children, the need for accessible, nutritious food during these months is more important than ever. Many existing food supports are school-centered and unavailable once classes end, while caregivers also face added pressures such as childcare and increased household expenses.

School's Out

Through this program, each school-aged child (ages 4–18) receives a specially prepared food bag filled with 8–10 nutritious, child-friendly items. These bags are thoughtfully packed to help ensure kids continue to have access to balanced, nourishing food even when school is out. During the summer months, extra items are added to better support children who rely on these meals.

School's Out

The launch of this year’s School’s Out Summer Food program was a powerful reminder of what community can achieve. It was a lively day full of smiles, fresh vegetables, inspiring conversations, and a shared commitment to making a real difference. Seeing families come together and children excited to receive nutritious bags of food highlighted the meaningful impact this program has across our community.

Gwillimdale Farms is proud to play a leading role in this initiative as the full School’s Out program sponsor, providing both a monetary contribution and a fresh, healthy addition to every bag: a 1 lb bag of locally grown carrots.

At Gwillimdale Farms, we believe that healthy eating starts early, and access to fresh produce is a key part of that foundation. Our carrots are a perfect fit for this program. Grown in nutrient-rich highland soil, they offer a naturally sweet flavour and crisp texture that kids enjoy, whether eaten raw as a snack or added to meals. Packed with essential nutrients like vitamins A and C, fiber, and antioxidants, carrots support healthy growth, strong immune systems, and sustained energy, helping kids stay active, engaged, and ready to enjoy their summer.

More broadly, root vegetables like carrots are true nutritional powerhouses. Alongside other staples such as potatoes, beets, and onions, they provide essential vitamins and minerals, aid digestion, and help maintain steady energy levels throughout the day. By incorporating nutrient-dense produce into children’s diets, we’re helping to build lifelong habits that support both physical health and overall well-being.

Beyond simply providing food, Gwillimdale Farms is deeply committed to supporting children’s success through education and awareness. We believe it’s important for young people to understand where their food comes from, the value of fresh, locally grown produce, and the role nutrition plays in their daily lives. By fostering this understanding, we hope to inspire healthier choices and a lasting connection to both food and agriculture.

This initiative is part of a broader mission, Cultivating Connections, that defines how Gwillimdale Farms supports its community. We’re not just growing crops; we’re investing in people. By partnering with organizations like the Helping Hand Food Bank, we’re working to ensure that every child has the nourishment they need to thrive, no matter the season.

Because every child deserves the chance to run, play, learn, and grow without worrying about their next meal.
