At Gwillimdale Farms, we believe healthy habits start young. That’s why our agricultural education programs for kids are designed to spark curiosity, build knowledge, and inspire lifelong respect for food, farming, and the environment. Whether in a primary classroom or a senior science lesson, our goal is simple: to help children understand where their food comes from, why healthy eating matters, and how supporting local farms benefits their communities and the planet.
Learning That Grows with Every Grade
From primary through intermediate to senior, our presentations are interactive, hands-on, and age appropriate.
- Primary (K–2): Kids learn about farm life, “eating the rainbow,” and how nutritious foods give them energy to play, learn, and grow. Fun activities like a carrot piano, colouring, and movement breaks keep young learners engaged.
- Intermediate (Grades 3–5): Students dive deeper into how food moves from farms to grocery stores, the role of farmers in their communities, and how to make balanced plates. They explore the Canadian Food Guide and bring creativity to meal planning activities.
- Senior (Grades 6–8): Older students explore real-world connections between nutrition, sustainability, and the economy. They participate in grocery list planning, discuss food systems, and consider how their daily choices impact personal health and the environment.
Why It Matters
Our program isn’t just about farming, it’s about fostering healthy, informed, and responsible citizens. Through each presentation, students:
- Discover healthy eating habits and how nutrients support growth, energy, and focus.
- Understand the importance of local agriculture, including reduced carbon footprints, fresher produce, and supporting Ontario farmers.
- Gain environmental awareness by learning about sustainability, food waste reduction, and eco-friendly choices.
- Engage through STEAM activities, connecting science, technology, art, and movement with food and farming.
By blending nutrition education with hands-on activities, we create learning experiences that stick with kids long after the school day ends.
Our Commitment to Education
Gwillimdale Education is about more than teaching, it’s about building connections between farm and table, soil and sustainability, families and communities. As a 5th generation family farm, we’re proud to share not just our vegetables, but our values with the next generation to continue to grow.
