Growing Strong: From Seed to Table with Innovation and Care

Growing

If there’s one thing farming teaches you, it’s patience, and this spring has been a perfect reminder of that.

Right now, we’re in the thick of planting season. After a rainy start to spring, we’re running slightly behind schedule, but our team is hard at work making up ground and setting the stage for a strong growing season ahead. Tractors are moving, fields are active, and seeds are going in the ground every day. We’ve already completed onion seed planting and onion transplants, and we’re now focused on potatoes, carrots, and other key crops that will fill your tables in the months ahead.

While the weather may slow us down, it never stops us. With the right people and processes in place, everything is progressing exactly as it should.

From Seed to Table: Total Control, Exceptional Quality

growing

As a grower, packer, and shipper, we control every step of the supply chain. That means we oversee the journey of our produce from the moment it’s a seed to the moment it reaches your plate. This full-circle approach allows us to maintain high standards of quality, freshness, and consistency.

But what many people don’t realize is that the process starts years before anything is planted.

We begin planning 3–5 years in advance. This includes sourcing seed from overseas, mapping crop rotations, and ensuring the soil will have the right balance of nutrients for each crop. The real groundwork begins in the fall prior to planting, when we finalize crop plans, align with retailer contracts, prepare land, and apply the necessary treatments.

In the spring, we move into seeding and managing crop growth through the summer. That means carefully monitoring water levels, adding irrigation during dry periods with pivot systems or removing excess water in wetter seasons like this one. Every decision is intentional, ensuring crops have exactly what they need to thrive.

Harvest, Storage, and Delivery: Built for Speed and Freshness

Harvest season begins as early as mid-July with crops like onion transplants. From there, products either go straight to our packing facility or into our climate-controlled storage.

Our storage facilities are designed to maintain optimal freshness, allowing us to supply high-quality produce year-round. When products are ready, they move to our packaging lines where they are cleaned, sorted, and packed for delivery.

We can ship anywhere across Canada or the continental United States within 3–4 days, ensuring a fast turnaround and fresh product in customers’ hands.

Soil Health: The Foundation of Everything We Do

Producing nutrient-rich root vegetables starts with healthy soil. That’s why crop rotation is a core part of our farming philosophy.

Root vegetables draw significant nutrients from the soil, so after harvesting, we plant cover crops such as wheat, corn, or soybeans to replenish those nutrients. We never plant vegetables back-to-back in the same field; instead, we wait 3 to 5 years before returning to ensure the land has fully recovered.

This long-term approach protects soil health, supports sustainability, and ultimately results in better-tasting, more nutritious produce.

Driven by Innovation

growing

Innovation is one of our core values, and it’s something we actively invest in. For over 20 years, the Hambly family has traveled to Europe to bring back advanced farming practices, technologies, and equipment. In many cases, Europe is 5–10 years ahead in agricultural innovation, and we’re committed to staying at the forefront.

We’ve already integrated AI into our operations. Since 2021, our packaging facility has used AI-powered systems to grade potatoes by size, color, and quality, improving efficiency and helping address labor challenges.

In 2025, we took another step forward by launching an AI-powered sprayer. This technology allows us to spot-treat weeds instead of spraying entire fields, reducing water use, lowering costs, and supporting a healthier environment for both our crops and our communities.

Growing the Future, Together

Despite a rainy start, the season is full of promise. Every seed we plant today represents careful planning, hard work, and a commitment to quality that spans years, not just months.

We’re proud of the journey our produce takes, and even prouder to share it with you.
