At Gwillimdale Farms, we believe that the future of agriculture depends on the passion, innovation, and leadership of the next generation. That belief is at the heart of our Grow With Gwillimdale Scholarship, an annual award designed to support young people who are committed to building a stronger, more sustainable agricultural industry. This year, we are proud to announce our 2026 scholarship recipient: Brendan Squire.
Brendan stood out among a strong group of applicants from across Ontario. His thoughtful essays, academic achievements, community involvement, and genuine passion for agriculture made a lasting impression on our selection committee. After reviewing applications, conducting interviews, and meeting Brendan in person during his visit to the farm, it became clear that he embodies the values and vision we hope to support through this scholarship.
A Strong Foundation in Agriculture
Brendan lives on a beef and cash crop farm, where his love for agriculture began at a young age. Growing up surrounded by livestock and crops, he developed a deep appreciation for the land, the animals, and the people who work tirelessly to feed our communities. This fall, he will begin his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, at the University of Guelph; one of Canada’s leading institutions for agricultural education.
His long‑term goal is to become a nutritionist for beef and dairy cattle, inspired in part by his father’s career in animal nutrition. Brendan spoke passionately about the importance of innovation in livestock feeding, including the use of commercial enzymes to improve digestibility, reduce waste, and enhance animal health. His understanding of the science behind nutrition, and his desire to push the industry forward; demonstrates a level of insight well beyond his years.
Committed to Sustainability and Stewardship
Brendan also recognizes that the future of agriculture depends on sustainability. He spoke about the importance of soil health, land stewardship, and responsible fertilizer use, emphasizing how practices like crop rotation, cover cropping, and soil testing can protect the environment while supporting long‑term productivity. His commitment to sustainable agriculture aligns closely with Gwillimdale Farms’ own values and long‑term vision.
Leadership, Character, and Community Impact
Beyond academics and technical knowledge, Brendan brings strong character and leadership. During his interview, he demonstrated integrity, humility, and a genuine desire to contribute positively to the agricultural community. He understands the importance of volunteerism and hopes to use his education to inspire others, especially younger generations, to embrace innovation and sustainability in their own farming practices.
One of the qualities that truly sets Brendan apart is his belief in the power of education. He understands that many people today are disconnected from the realities of agriculture and may not fully appreciate the science, technology, and innovation behind the food they eat. Brendan hopes to help bridge that gap.
Supporting Brendan’s Educational Journey
As the 2026 Grow With Gwillimdale Scholarship recipient, Brendan will receive $10,000 CAD to support his first year of post‑secondary studies. In addition, he will have the opportunity to build an ongoing relationship with Gwillimdale Farms through mentorship, check‑ins during his first year, and potential consideration for a co‑op placement. At the end of his first academic year, he will also be eligible for an additional $5,000 CAD performance award, based on academic achievement and engagement.
